In the United Kingdom, a hurricane? Although it seems improbable, it almost took place. Back in 1987, when meteorologist Michael Fish gave his regular weather report, everything began. “Good afternoon to you all today,” he said. Apparently, a woman called the BBC and reported hearing that a hurricane was approaching. Don’t worry if you’re watching; there aren’t! And in a technical sense, Fish was right. The storm that became known as the “Great Storm of 1987” was actually a cyclone rather than a hurricane, but British citizens didn’t seem to mind. When the nation was pummeled and destroyed by winds of over 100 mph, causing more than 1 billion pounds of damage and taking 19 lives, it certainly seemed like a hurricane. According to others, if Fish had been more casual in his weather report, people could have been better prepared. Fish subsequently apologized live on air.
