9. Blue Lightning in Different Geographical Regions

Blue lightning strikes different geographical areas at variable frequency. It is more often seen in places prone to strong thunderstorms, such the tropics or places with great atmospheric instability. For instance, the blue-tinted discharges of the Venezuelan Catatumbo lightning phenomenon—which generates regular and continuous lightning activity—are well recognised.
Because of their interplay with atmospheric dynamics, mountainous areas can also offer ideal conditions for blue lightning. Knowing these geographical differences enables researchers to identify worldwide patterns of atmospheric electrical activity and their correlation to climate and weather systems.
