5. The Phenomenon of Ionization in Blue Lightning

A fundamental mechanism behind blue lightning’s creation is ionisation. Lightning’s strong electrical current steals electrons from the gas molecules in the air to produce ions. This ionisation technique generates blue light especially effectively. Many of the photons produced by the recombination of these ions with free electrons fall in the blue spectrum.
The strength of the electrical field and the air composition will affect the ionising intensity. Strong ionising circumstances, including those seen in the upper atmosphere or in really severe storms, accentuate the blue colour of lightning.
