4. The Amazonian Anomaly: Rainforest Revelation

The fourth red lightning bolt became evident deep under the rich Amazon rainforest canopy. The rich jungle was illuminated by a red flash seen by indigenous groups and a party of botanists on a biodiversity census. The occurrence corresponded with an exceptional increase in bioluminescent activity among the surrounding flora and fauna, which led some scientists to hypothesise about a possible link between the red lightning and the complicated biology of the forest.
Reports of faster plant growth and more animal activity in the impacted area surfaced in the days after the lightning strike. Working with atmospheric scientists, the botanists started to investigate the idea that the red lightning might be influencing life itself in ways yet unknown, not only a visual phenomena.
The study team found a sequence of amazing changes in the forest environment as they descended towards the impact zone. Trees struck by the red lightning showed exponential growth, reaching heights and girths that should have taken decades to reach; they showed no evidence of harm. These plants’ leaves had odd characteristics including improved photosynthetic efficiency and nighttime dim, reddish glow emission capability.
More remarkable were the results seen in the nearby fauna. Previously on the verge of extinction, species of frogs and insects suddenly flourished, revealing vivid fresh colour patterns and behaviour. Found blossoming at the epicentre of the lightning strike, a hitherto unknown species of orchid had dazzling, otherworldly iridescence on its petals. Subtle but notable changes in their DNA were found by genetic study of these plants and animals, as though quick evolution had been facilitated by red lightning.
