9. Beetle Companions



Many species of beetles have evolved to exist only in termite colonies, creating amazing symbiotic interactions with their hosts.Termitophiles, these beetles, have evolved both physically and functionally to fit quite well into termite life.They create chemical compounds that let the colony absorb them and often copy termite communication signals.Some beetle species offer their hosts useful services such predator defense or control of destructive fungus.Many of these beetle species cannot survive outside of termite nests since this interaction has been so specialized.
