10. Microbial Mat Communities

Complex communities of microorganisms create specialized biofilms or microbial mats within termite nests that are absolutely vital for colony health and operation.Together, these microscopic communities—which include many bacteria, archaea, and other microorganisms—create stable, favorable habitats inside the nest.Through their metabolic activities, they assist control humidity, process waste products, and provide structural integrity of the nest. While the microorganisms help to maintain the nests and colony health by their different biochemical processes, the termites give these microorganisms a sheltered environment and supplies of nutrients.
