When the Esso Hibernia was being built in the United Kingdom, it dwarfed everything in its path. When the ship launched in 1970, 6,000 people watched it happen. The Hibernia was retired in 1983, so she had a rather lengthy career.

Compared to the Esso Northumbria, her sister ship, which was one year longer, At the time, the 250,000-tonne supertanker, the Hibernia, was the largest ship of her sort ever built in England, with a length of about 1,100 feet.
