In April 2023, the owner of the Mavericks was fined $750,000 for “tanking,” which is the practice of sitting down his best players to increase the team’s loss total and get more draft picks.
Even though the NBA has battled tanking for a very long time, owners like Cuban haven’t really been discouraged from trying it. Cuban has been penalized for tanking twice already; a few years ago, he was forced to pay $600,000 for the same infraction.
