1. A 140-Character Fine by J.R. Smith
2013 is the year of the fine.
Total Estimated Fine: $25,000*
In our social media-driven society, everything and anything may come back to bite you. This is one of the many reasons it’s important to be careful what you post online, especially for celebrities. J.R. Smith, the brother of Chris Smith, responded to remarks made by Detroit Pistons player Brandon Jennings regarding Chris Smith’s inclusion on an NBA roster. Should we say tweet instead?

J.R. Smith lost $25,000. He spent 140 characters tweeting to defend his brother. It is a small price to pay for an NBA player to protect his family’s honor.
2. James Harrison Was Penalized For Illegally Hitting His Enemy’s Head.
Year of Fine: 2010
Estimated Fine Amount: $95,000*
James Harrison was the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Defensive Player of the Year and had won two Super Bowls by the time he had completed six full seasons of his NFL career. Harrison, needless to say, was feeling fairly victorious. His 2010 season-long performances served as evidence.

James Harrison was fined for unlawful head hits against his opponents. Harrison was fined $50,000 for illegally hitting a Cleveland Browns player in the head early in the season. Soon after, he was charged with another fine, this time for $25,000, for striking a Tennessee Titans player in the head. Harrison went on an additional headhunting expedition. He received an extra $20,000 in punishment after taking Saints quarterback Drew Brees on a tackle later in the season.
3. Mark Cuban was fined $750,000 for tanking again.
2023 is the year of the fine.
Total Estimated Fine: $750,000*
Owning billions of dollars, Mark Cuban has repeatedly demonstrated that he doesn’t give a damn about penalties. In April 2023, the owner of the Mavericks was fined $750,000 for “tanking,” which is the practice of sitting down his best players to increase the team’s loss total and get more draft picks.

Even though the NBA has battled tanking for a very long time, owners like Cuban haven’t really been discouraged from trying it. Cuban has been penalized for tanking twice already; a few years ago, he was forced to pay $600,000 for the same infraction.
