Blue lightning has been connected in many myths and spiritual traditions with rejuvenation and atonement. One could consider the strong heat and brightness of lightning as able to burn away both physical and spiritual contaminants.
Blue lightning was used in several Native American purification rites to drive the spirit clear and get people ready for significant events or life changes. It was believed that lightning’s abrupt, strong character was especially successful in rapidly burning away past misdeeds or harmful energies.
In Hinduism, Lord Indra—the god of thunder and lightning—is sometimes connected with the cleaning rains that follow a lightning storm. In this sense, blue lightning represents the divine force to clear the past and open space for fresh development and rejuvenation.
