9.The Return of the God Forsaken Jeans Dress (Jress)
The horrible jeans dress, sometimes known as the Jress, caught us once more just when we thought we were secure. Is there any escaping this ugly dream? Will we ever be free from that awful piece of clothing? Given that this jeans dress features the stylistic tears and holes common in jeans, it is considerably worse than most jresses. That’s really overdone, Cardi B. We’re not sure how she’s maintaining a straight face while sporting that. Of course, none of anything illegal. Her music much appeals to us. We’re bothered only by this clothing. Though the idea of upcycling denim into formal dress is not intrinsically awful, this specific version seems to fall short completely. Although modern on regular jeans, the frayed elements seem out of place on a dress suited for more formal events. Someone took every denim style from the past ten years and forcedly merged them into one garment. The outcome is a work that battles to define itself; is it casual? Formal? Is that streetwear? Its design clearly leaves one confused. The fact that even a style icon like Cardi B cannot fully make it work says loudly about the basic problems in its development. Maybe some fashion experiments—especially those involving merging elements destined never to coexist—are better left on the drawing board phase.
