Everyone has found 2020 to be an odd year, with an increasing number of individuals using do-it-yourself projects as a source of entertainment. Even if it seems appealing to make over a pair of shoes or build your own custom car air conditioning system, stop and consider whether it’s really worth it.
DIY projects are nothing new, after all. Over the years, a lot of people have attempted to create something out of nothing, but for every success story, there are several failure stories that end up online. Would it be wiser to visit Walmart and get the actual product, or would you rather wind up in the Hall of Shame like these makers?
Positively, even if you wind up needing to spend a substantial fortune trying to correct your error, an epic fail makes for an excellent narrative. But even if it seems like a smart idea to cut corners, these examples might make you reconsider before pulling out the drill!
1. The “Fixed” Couch Seat
Estimated Cost: $300* for new; $30* for do-it-yourself
A malfunctioning coffee maker or a vengeful manager are just two examples of the many things that may go wrong at work. While offices and shop floors are frequently kept immaculate, the staff room is a very different story. Consider this couch, which has seen better days.

Instead of taking a financial hit on a new one from Bed, Bath, and Beyond, one employee of the month chose to save the day by repairing the damaged seat by inserting a dining chair into the sofa. Subtract the chair’s price, and you’ve saved a couple hundred dollars.
Not that this couch is very attractive or comfortable, but let’s get real: workers don’t spend a lot of time in the break room these days. It would be wiser to save those valuable bucks for the next workplace party rather than squandering them on new chairs, don’t you think?
