The notorious Prohibition era in American history saw attempts by the government to outlaw the use of alcoholic beverages. The Mafia and other criminal organizations emerged as a result of Prohibition’s failure, which was mostly caused by lawbreakers who devised ways to manufacture and distribute alcohol in defiance of the law.

Los Angeles’s Deserted Speakeasy Tunnels
There are abandoned 1920s tunnels in Los Angeles (and perhaps many other cities, we’d venture to assume). During Prohibition, these tunnels led to speakeasies, where people drank alcohol and enjoyed live music. There was no public way to get to these secret gatherings, and one tour of the shuttered speakeasy tunnels involved following directions scribbled on a cocktail napkin.
