6. They Are Not True Hibernators

Unlike actual hibernators, grizzly bears approach winter survival in a different way. Whereas many animals go into a deep hibernation, grizzlies go through a separate phenomenon called torpor. Grizzly bears depend on the fat reserves they build during the warmer months to give the energy required for survival throughout the winter. This adaption lets them survive several months in their dens without food, drink, or waste disposal needed.
Late summer and early fall see the start of the winter preparation process when grizzlies experience hyperphagia—extreme food consumption—to store up fat reserves. Over the long winter, this fat provides energy and acts as insulation against the cold. grizzlies will withdraw to dens when winter hits; they usually burrow into the ground or discover these sites in rocky outcrops. As the bears enter their torpor, these dens offer a warm and safe habitat.
A grizzly bear’s metabolic rate falls dramatically during torpor. Their slowing down of heart rate and respiration lets them save energy. Mother grizzlies with cubs will spend a lot of time in their dens over the winter, tending to and shielding their young.
