They are an issue in each of the 50 states and can result in up to 50 fatalities annually. It’s unsettling to see such a large rock shattered on the highway, but you’re also relieved that nobody was there when it fell.

11. Monte Kali


Found in: Henringen, Hesse, Eastern Germany. Price: not specified
The enormous spoil heap that stands over the little German town of Heringen, Hesse, is called Monte Kali, or Kalimanjaro. The location is where the chemical manufacturer K+S disposes of its excess sodium chloride, or table salt.

The company’s adjacent potash mining and processing, which is a major industry in Hesse, is the source of all this extra table salt. Climbers from all over the world come to this 1,740-foot-high salt pile for its distinctive challenge.

This type of tree is called a Giant Kapok, and it grows in Florida (Palm Beach is where this shot was taken). In certain tropical regions, kapok trees can reach heights of 200 feet and grow up to 13 feet a year.
