11. Monte Kali

The enormous spoil heap that stands over the little German town of Heringen, Hesse, is called Monte Kali, or Kalimanjaro. The location is where the chemical manufacturer K+S disposes of its excess sodium chloride, or table salt.

The company’s adjacent potash mining and processing, which is a major industry in Hesse, is the source of all this extra table salt. Climbers from all over the world come to this 1,740-foot-high salt pile for its distinctive challenge.
