When hard disc drives were first used commercially in the late 1950s, their appearance was very different from what it is today. Because engineers and scientists had not yet managed to compactify technology, hard drives were enormous in the 1960s.

Computers of the 1960s were huge, as big as two desks combined, and weighed 1,000 pounds, far from being as svelte as contemporary Mac laptops. The technology of the 1960s wasn’t particularly svelte or portable, even if it was an improvement over prior computers that occupied a whole room.
