11. Pizza Box Saver

Best Place to Purchase: Pizza Hut, Domino’s (cheapest delivery)
Average Product Price: $0 (comes with pizza)*
Have you ever gone to grab a slice of pizza and accidentally pulled apart the slices next to it? As much as we love our gooey, cheesy pizza, it can be a little hard to separate the slices – especially for those of us who order pizzas with extra cheese.

The pizza box saver (the little white plastic circle in every Domino’s Pizza box) can help with that. Use the saver to hold down the slice of pizza next to the one that you want. It’s far more hygienic as well, as you don’t have to use your hands to touch the other slices.

12. Bread Tags

Best Place to Purchase: Local grocery stores, Walmart, Costco
Average Product Price: $2.48*
Cords are hard to distinguish. They look almost identical, and it can be a nightmare trying to sort out which is which. What you can do to make life easier is reuse bread tags. The plastic bread tags can fit around a computer cable. Write the name of the device to which the cord belongs on the tag and slip it on the cable.

Don’t bother buying plastic or paper labels when you can just use what’s in your house. If you buy in bulk at places like Sam’s Club or Costco, you’ll have bread tags galore for labeling.

13. Backpack Patches

Best Place to Purchase: Etsy, Walmart, Target
Average Product Price: $1-$10*
Whether for school or for your own adventuring, you’ve probably spent a pretty penny investing in the perfect backpack. And if so, you might have noticed a little tab in the center of the bag. Typically it’s a diamond-shaped leather patch with two slots in the center.

The patch is called a “pig snout” or a “lash tab.” You can fasten equipment to it by weaving a string through the patch to tie your gear to the bag. Etsy and other local sellers often have creative (yet functional) backpack patches from which to choose.

14. Dress Shirt Loops

Best Place to Purchase: Kohl’s, Target
Average Product Price: $10-$50 (for the dress shirt)*
This one dates back to the Gant Company, which was one of the major dress shirt producers. Ivy League customers were particularly fond of the preppy shirts’ style, and the Gant Company added a new feature to its dress shirts: locker loops. These are the little loops of fabric on the back of men’s dress shirts.

The loop was named the “locker loop” because men could hang their shirts up by it, preventing the button-downs from getting wrinkled—a hack that is still true today. However, you can buy comparatively less pricey shirts from stores like Kohl’s and Target.

15. Ketchup Cups

Best Place to Purchase: Fast food stores (free)
Average Product Price: $0 with order*
When it comes to paper condiment cups, it never seems like there is enough space for the proper amount of ketchup—even if the fries you’re dunking are small. But here’s a trick: when using your McDonald’s paper ketchup cup, flatten it out first.

The cup expands, enabling you to put more ketchup in it. There’s also a wider area in the cup for you to dunk chicken nuggets or fries. Turns out, the ketchup cups have actually been sized right all along—and they’re free, too (once you buy a meal, of course).

16. Soda Can Tabs

Best Place to Purchase: Wholesale stores
Average Product Price: $10/24-count*
This product hack has made the rounds on social media more than a few times. As Food Beast said, we’ve been using the tabs on soda cans “all wrong.” The tab on your favorite can of Coca-Cola or Pepsi can be rotated and used as a straw holder.

First, open the soda can. Then, rotate the tab so that the tab hole is over the can opening. You can easily slip a plastic, paper, or metal straw through the tab. It’s unclear whether that was the intended purpose for the rotatable can tab or just a happy, yet unintended, perk.

17. Gas Tank Meter

Best Place to Purchase: Local mechanic
Average Product Price: $250-$800*
Hopefully you already know which side the gas tank is on in your own car – but what if you’re driving a friend’s car or a rental? There are few things more frustrating than realizing you’ve pulled up to the wrong side of a gas pump at Sunoco.

Luckily, the gas meter inside the car tells you what side the tank is on. The little arrow next to the gas tank emblem on the meter will point left or right, indicating the tank’s side. Bet you overlooked that little helper about a million times!

18. Highway Road Signs

Best Place to Purchase: N/A (unless you’re the government)
Average Product Price: $30-$40/square foot*
Another driving-related hack, though not exactly for a product you can find on Amazon or at Walmart or Target, has to do with highway signs. There are tons of signs on the highway, and it can be confusing to keep track of which lane to stay in.

Missing your exit can be avoided if you note the side that your destination’s sign is on. If your destination’s sign is on the left, your exit will, eventually, be on the left. If it is on the right, your destination’s exit will be on the right, giving you a heads-up on what lane to be in.

19. Wooden Spoon For Pasta

Best Place to Purchase: Dollar store/budget store
Average Product Price: $1-$5*
This hack involves a little bit of basic chemistry. If you’re a fan of pasta you already know that pasta bubbling over is an annoyingly common problem when you’re cooking the delicious meal. However, using a wooden spoon can cut down the bubbles.

A dry wooden spoon will, when inserted into the boiling pasta bubbles, destabilize the bubbles because the surface is water-repellent. The spoon is also cooler than the water, which breaks up the bubbling foam. You can buy a wooden spoon/bubble-breaker at budget stores like Dollar General for under $5.

20. Slushy Lids

Best Place to Purchase: 7/11
Average Product Price: $1-$1.79*
This is another product hack that swept through social media once people realized its implications. There are few things more refreshing than a cold Slushy from 7-Eleven, Sheetz or Sunoco, especially in the summer. However, you might not realize that there is a key to getting way more Slushy for your money: turning the lid upside-down.

Fill up your Slushy or Slurpee, and then flip the lid over. You can fill the lid to the brim with your drink without spilling, as the lid acts like a funnel. You’ll end up with more delicious Slushy than you would if you kept the lid right-side-up.
