8. Nuclear Power Plant in Olkiluoto

Where: Euraijoki, Finland
Completed Cost: $12.4 billion
* Year: 2021
The Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant has been in operation since the late 1970s and is owned and operated by Teollisuuden Voima (TVO), a nuclear power corporation based in Finland. But in 2000, following twenty years of trouble-free operation, TVO submitted a request for permission for an extra reactor unit to the Finnish government.

Three years after the unit’s approval in 2002, the building got underway. The new unit’s formal start of power production was delayed by a few unforeseen events, and it didn’t happen until March 12, 2022. The nuclear power facility in Finland has already cost more than $12 billion, and there are still plans in place for at least one additional reactor in the future.
