4. The Øresund Bridge

Place: In between Sweden and Denmark
Completed Cost: $6.5 Billion*;
Year Completed: 1999
In the 1930s, a grand scheme to link Sweden and Denmark (via Malmö and Copenhagen) was proposed. The Øresund Bridge was finally finished in 1999 after decades of delays, much debate about whether it would operate, and numerous cancellations (and renewals).

When the $6.5 billion project was completed, the majority of the Øresund Bridge looked very impressive. The exquisitely designed 4.87-mile bridge, the about 2.5-mile-long Drogden Tunnel, and Peberholm, the man-made island that acts as the Drogden Tunnel’s entry point, make up the three components of the system.
