The Stockholm County Council decided in 2008 that a new teaching hospital was necessary for the university in Solna. After ten years and $6.61 billion, a magnificent 3.5 million-square-foot, 12-story structure was constructed, and thus far, it appears to have been well worth the investment.

The pediatric unit and cardiovascular themes had started to relocate into the New Karolinska University Hospital by 2016, despite the facility not being finished yet. By the end of 2018, the remaining portion of the hospital was operational. Although at first seen as a pipe dream, the private-public concept of the Nya Karolinska Hospital has now proven to be successful.
