Often referred to simply as “The Louvre,” the Gothic-styled Louvre Palace was built in the 1100s. Before being reopened to the public as a museum, the Louvre was used for centuries as a royal palace. The Louvre has served as a military installation in addition to a palace and museum.

Originally, Philip II Augustus had it built as a castle to guard France’s Wall. Since then, the French have continued working on it, and millions of tourists visit it every year, making it one of the most well-liked tourist destinations in the nation.
