The Swedish government ordered the Gripen’s development in 1979 because it needed an aircraft that could be used for reconnaissance, combat, and attack. The Gripen was intended to take the place of the SAF’s outdated technological Draken and Viggen. The scheme will cost $13.54 billion in total.
