From the 1960s to the 2000s, the Benjamin-Franklin class submarine was in operation. The James-Madison class submarines were replaced by the Benjamin-Franklin class, which was initially constructed using a Polaris A3 ballistic missile before being modified. To accommodate the Poseidon C3 missile, they were modified.

The Ben Franklin submarines underwent additional modifications in the 1980s, with six of them modified to accommodate Trident C4 missiles. With a length of 425 feet and an S5W nuclear reactor, the Ben Franklin class of submarines was more significant than the Los Angeles class. There are now only two in the mega-giant class.
