9.This Shouldn’t Even Be Called A “Dress”

Look, with regard to our style, we are really liberal. If someone named a pair of loafers “lace-up shoes” or if someone called a sweatshirt a sweater or something else, we wouldn’t mind it much; but, it will be difficult to persuade us that whatever this is, is a dress. The basic notion of a dress seems to have been totally lost in favour of what looks to be an utter minimalistic exercise. That simply is not a dress. A dress must, well, outfit the one sporting it. The fundamental purpose of clothes seems to have been lost in the search of pushing limits: covering and protecting. And we most definitely cannot claim that the woman in this picture is fully clothed. Alright, maybe she is; our idea of being presentable has to change, but this is stretching the envelope. Although the fashion business is always redefining and challenging accepted standards, there comes a time when we have to wonder whether we are still in the domain of clothes or have entered performance art space. This article seems to have passed the threshold, leaving us to consider the basic notion of what qualifies as a modern garment.
