Spanish Water Dog

The Spanish Water Dog is an energetic and highly athletic breed that thrives on physical activity and mental stimulation. These dogs require plenty of exercise throughout the day to keep them happy and healthy, making them best suited for active owners or families who can meet their high energy levels. Without proper outlets for their energy, they can quickly become bored, which may lead to destructive behaviors. Their intelligence and eagerness to please make them highly trainable, but consistent training and engagement are necessary to bring out the best in them.

Originally believed to have roots in Turkey, the Spanish Water Dog was brought to Spain, where it became a versatile working breed. Traditionally used as a guard dog and sheepdog, they are incredibly loyal to their families and often form strong bonds with their owners. This loyalty, combined with their natural protective instincts, makes them excellent watchdogs. However, their strong herding and guarding tendencies mean they need proper socialization from an early age to ensure they are well-adjusted and comfortable in various situations.
