Chow Chow

The Chow Chow has a personality similar to a cat—aloof, independent, and dignified, while also shedding heavily. Its thick Arctic coat makes it unsuitable for mild climates, and its dominant nature makes it challenging for owners who want to take charge of this part-teddy bear, part-lion, and part-black-tongued breed. As one of the world’s oldest breeds, the Chow Chow is believed to have originated in China.

This unique but vocal dog tends to yap frequently, which may not please neighbors. It often strives to assert dominance within the household and does not do well with children or strangers, sometimes showing aggression. With an experienced handler, the Chow Chow can be socialized properly, but this breed is not recommended for families without a strong, disciplined leader familiar with dog training.
