Greyhound

The Greyhound is an ancient breed believed to have originated in Egypt or Greece. With its long legs, arched back, and lean, aerodynamic body, this dog is built for speed. While known today as a racing dog, Greyhounds were originally bred by British nobility for hunting foxes, deer, and hare. They have a strong prey drive, which is why they are often muzzled. Small animals and even children can trigger their prey instinct. When walking a Greyhound, always keep a firm hold on the leash, as they are the fastest of all dog breeds and will chase anything they perceive as prey.

Despite their speed, Greyhounds have a gentle and calm temperament. They do not require much exercise; a short daily walk is enough, making them surprisingly suitable for apartment living. Known as “40-mph couch potatoes,” they are sprinters rather than endurance runners. Greyhounds are sensitive to cold weather due to their short coat, so a sweater is recommended on chilly days. Grooming is simple, but a high fence, at least six feet tall, is necessary to prevent escapes.
