Rottweiler

The Rottweiler has served as a police dog, herding dog, military dog, and therapy dog. This breed is highly trainable and extremely loyal. Rottweilers excel as working dogs but can become destructive when bored, often chewing furniture if not given tasks. Their strong work ethic dates back to Roman times when they were likely used as drover dogs. The breed’s name comes from the German town of Rottweil, where Roman bath roof tiles were sourced.

Rottweilers rank second to Pit Bulls in bite-related fatalities. Some homeowner insurance policies may not cover homes with a Rottweiler, and owners are responsible for any damage caused by the dog. This breed is powerful, large, and highly protective. Weighing up to 135 pounds, mostly muscle, a Rottweiler’s instinct is to attack perceived threats, which could include visitors if not properly trained and socialized. This protective nature makes it an effective police dog.
