Australian Shepherd

Despite its name, the Australian Shepherd originated in North America and was bred as a herding dog in the Western states during the Gold Rush era. This is a highly active breed that requires at least a couple of hours of exercise daily. Its high stamina allows it to work as a herder all day long.

As a herding breed, the Australian Shepherd is bold, confident, alert, intelligent, and responsive. However, without sufficient daily exercise, these traits can lead to challenging behaviors. Another potential issue in a family setting is its tendency to herd children and pets, often nipping and using other herding behaviors.
