Perro de Presa Canario

The Perro de Presa Canario originated in the Canary Islands as a livestock dog. It was used for herding cattle and hogs and for protecting herds by driving away or even killing predatory animals. This is a powerful breed that VetStreet strongly recommends only for experienced dog owners who are skilled in training. As a cautionary example, VetStreet reported that in 2006, two Presas killed a woman in San Francisco because their owner was unable to control them.

Early training and socialization are essential for this breed. Training must be ongoing, and the dog should “work” for rewards such as treats and toys by performing commands. Professional training is highly recommended. Without proper control, the Presa may chase and kill small animals like neighborhood cats or dogs. This breed has a very strong territorial instinct and prey drive.
