Catahoula Leopard Dog

The full name of this breed is the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog. It was originally used as a working dog on farms in northern Louisiana, where it herded hogs to slaughter. Native Americans also used this breed to hunt wild game, and the name “Catahoula” comes from their tribes. The Catahoula Leopard Dog is recognized as the official state dog of Louisiana.

This breed is an affectionate and loyal companion but requires plenty of exercise and a large, fenced yard. It needs firm leadership and regular walks or jogs. These dogs should always be kept on a leash. Owners who are not prepared to take on the alpha role are not recommended for this breed. In a human household, the dog views its family as its pack. If you do not establish yourself as the pack leader, the dog will assume that role, and its decision-making may not be appreciated.
