Caucasian Ovcharka

The Caucasian Ovcharka was originally bred to guard sheep and protect flocks from wolves in the Caucasus Mountain region of Eastern Europe. Known for its territorial and aggressive nature, this breed performed its duties with diligence. The Caucasian Ovcharka, whose name means “sheepdog” in Russian, originated in the 1920s.

This breed has a thick double coat that requires significant maintenance and is best suited for a cool climate. While it is a low-energy dog, it is also high-strung and strong-willed. Without proper socialization, it can become aggressive. According to VetStreet, “While his protective nature may be attractive to some people, the Ovcharka is not an ideal match for novice dog owners. He’s smart but also an independent thinker, so he needs someone who can guide him with firm, loving, and patient training.”
