The Pont Jacques Chaban-Delmas uses a vertical lift system for operation. This indicates that the span stays parallel to the deck even as it rises vertically. The vertical lift has an advantage over bascules and swing spans in terms of construction costs per square foot. Building the Chaban-Delmas took three years.
