The Italian term for Pont Vecchio, or “Old Bridge,” refers to this famous bridge that dates back to Roman construction. In Florence, Italy, the Arno River is crossed by the Ponte Vecchio. It clears 98 feet and spans 105 feet. Throughout the Renaissance, numerous stores were constructed alongside the Ponte Vecchio.

Originally, butchers, tanners, and farmers worked at Pont Vecchio’s stores. With time, jewelers, souvenir vendors, and art merchants supplanted one another. Although the original cost of Ponte Vecchio is unknown (the bridge wasn’t even mentioned in official records until 996 A.D.), its replacement and maintenance in modern times came at a cost of $5 million.
