A lot of people still talk about the tragic tale of the RMS Rhone’s disaster. The British Royal Navy declared the Rhone to be “unsinkable,” much like the Titanic. Because of this assertion, when the ship and the RMS Conway sailed together, all of the passengers from the latter were moved to the Rhone in order to ensure that they would be safe from an impending storm by the “unsinkable” ship.

Hurricane San Narciso hit while both ships paused at Great Harbour, Peter Island, to refuel. The ferocious gusts caused the Rhone to split in two, where it eventually sank. The underwater remnants of the Rhone were designated as a national marine park in 1980, and since then, the area has grown to become a top diving destination that continues to enjoy great popularity.
