4. Eleonore, The Nile Crocodile in Paris, France
Current Estimated Value: $836*ear Vanished: 1980s
Discovered in 1984
To the surprise of the people, Eleonore, a friendly Nile crocodile, was discovered in the sewers close to the Seine River in Paris, France. Although young Eleonore had been making a dent in the number of rats in Paris, it was clear that this pet needed to find a better home outside the sewers and the depths of the Seine.

Eleonore, it turns out, was a pet that had grown too large in the 1980s. Sadly, her owner abandoned her after discarding her in the sewers. Vannes, a Brittany aquarium crew, moved Eleonore into an enclosure in 1984, where she passed away until 2021. Eleonore’s cage in the aquarium was thoughtfully constructed to resemble the Paris sewers that the amiable crocodile had come to enjoy.
