15. Bom Jesus

Estimated Current Value: $9 million*; Year of Disappearance: 1533; Year of Discovery: 2008
The Bom Jesus is one example of the luxury commerce products that were carried on many of the ships that sank in prior ages. After setting sail on March 7, 1533, the ship was never seen again. It wasn’t until 2008—and even then, unintentionally—that its remnants were found during a diamond mining operation.

According to archaeologists, the ship must have sunk after striking a rock when it approached the coast too closely in Namibia while sailing to Western India. The wreckage of this ship was officially discovered when Kaapamda Shadika was mining the area for diamonds and came across elephant ivory and copper ingots. The wreckage contained numerous priceless cargo items, including copper ingots, elephant tusks, and gold and silver coins.
