When the Igara struck a rock in the South China Sea, it sank, causing the greatest single marine insurance loss in the history of maritime travel. Nearly 127,718 metric tons of Brazilian iron ore, valued at a staggering $25 million, were loaded into the ship.

The Igara wreckage has developed into a popular recreational dive destination, much like other wreckages that are not too far down into the ocean. Divers have also claimed to have seen a variety of marine life, including snappers, corals, sharks, and many other species, living at the location.
