A very high-altitude lake in the Himalayas is called Roopkund. Because there are hundreds of human skeletons near the margin of this tiny lake, it is also known as “Skeleton Lake” and “Mystery Lake.” Given that Roopkund is 16,470 feet above sea level and has no habitation in the vicinity, how did the skeletons arrive there?

When the lake’s water level is low, the skeletons are visible during the melting season, and the remains of 300 people have been discovered to date. Local folklore holds that Roopkund was originally a shrine; one day, during a large-scale pilgrimage, a massive thunderstorm hit, ruining the celebration.
