Designed by Grumman Northrop, A two-seat, twin-engine, variable-sweep, twin-tail, supersonic fighter jet is the F-14 Tomcat. It was the first fighter jet in American history to feature two tails. The project was first created by Northrop Grumman for the Naval Fighter Experimental Program of the United States Navy.

Since the F-111B, the Program’s previous aircraft, was a complete failure, Northrop Grumman was expecting for success with this one. In 1970, the Tomcat made its first flight. The U.S. Navy retired it in 2006 after it was first used in 1974. The Iranian Air Force continues to use the Tomcat.
