4. North Carolina’s Chapel Hill, the abandoned Dome House

Place: North Carolina’s Chapel Hill
Year: Not specified
Price: Not specified
There’s an abandoned, dilapidated dome house in the middle of the woods in Fox Chapel, North Carolina. It is constructed in a fashion reminiscent of the “Futuro Houses” architectural craze of the 1960s. These prefabricated, dome-shaped residences were created by a Finnish architect and quickly became popular after their 1968 release.

Although the Chapel Hill Dome House is Futuro-inspired, it appears that its owners’ ambitions have not been realized. Its unique bubble shape and rotting state are visible along Jack Bennett Road, where locals have chosen to leave it alone. There’s no real entry into the house because the deck is deteriorating and the roof has collapsed in.
