Built for Hugh Robert Hughes, a copper tycoon well-known for leading an opulent lifestyle, this magnificent residence was quite the undertaking. It was a house for a number of families before being transformed into a boys school, a spa for rheumatoid arthritis patients, and finally a military convalescent center during World War 2.

It was once more taken over after the war, first becoming a school for females and subsequently a Christian conference center. The mansion’s last known owner was a mystery buyer who bought it in 2011 with the intention of turning it into a five-star hotel, but those intentions were never realized. The property was overrun by thieves and left deserted. It was put up for auction in 2021 to a local who wished to bring it back to its former splendor, but encouraging outcomes have not yet been observed.
