The Hellinikon International Airport served more over 12 million travelers annually and was regarded as Athens’ primary airport until 2001, when Athens International Airport took its place and it was eventually abandoned. Due to financial difficulties, noise pollution, and security issues, the airport was closed. Additionally, several officials said that the airport could not accommodate the nation’s expanding tourism demands.

Up until one development group seized control of the airport in 2019, numerous plans to renovate it were curated and then abandoned. The site will be transformed into a metropolitan park with residences, hotels, theme parks, and sports facilities, among other amenities.
