At Belize’s Actun Tunichil Muknal, a major archeological site, several Mayan artifacts have been discovered. The translation of its name, “The Cave of the Crystal Sepulcher,” alludes to its infamous finding. Skeletons, the victims of human hands, were placed among ceremonial objects and on altars in the cave, where it was used as a location for ritual sacrifice.

From one to roughly forty years old, some exhibit a skull-like structure. The most terrifying discovery is the totally calcified remains of The Crystal Maiden, a 17-year-old who was first believed to be female. His vertebrae show evidence of a long, agonizing demise; the look of the calcium crystals like snow sculpture is unsettling.
