Created in 2009; Average Cost: $50-$100*
There are only square watermelons in Japan. The square watermelon, known as the Shikaku Suika, is cultivated into a cube shape using tempered glass and is purely decorative. Most of them cost around $50, but others can go up to $100. The melons belong to the gourmet fruit craze that has taken Japan by storm.

Sadly, these shikaku suika are essentially inedible. Because they are picked before they reach ripeness, they are bland, tough, and green. Even though they are pricey, these square watermelons are inexpensive when compared to the $160 Yubari cantaloupe. One was sold for $23,500 at an auction once.
This incredibly unusual-looking fruit is so well-known in Japanese culture that it can be seen in practically every kind of Japanese entertainment, including video games, anime movies, and even some vintage Japanese motion pictures.
