King The twelfth-century monarch Richard I, popularly referred to as Richard the Lionheart, was skilled at giving unique wedding presents. He spent a large portion of his forty-two-year reign in the Holy Land, spending little time in England. He also met Berengaria of Navarre, his future queen, on the island of Cyprus.

He stopped to pick up an unexpected gift on the way. After overthrowing the insane tyrant who had been the Emperor of Cyprus, Richard I claimed Cyprus for England. Richard sent the overthrown Emperor a gift for his future bride after he had him wrapped in chains made of gold and silver.
