Queen Elizabeth II’s daughter, Princess Anne, married Captain Mark Phillips in the 1970s. In an effort to give the monarch something unique, the members of the British Cabinet chipped in and purchased a rug for Anne and her husband. The final amount of each person’s portion was approximately $14.37, making the total cost of the rug $316.14.

In a personal note, Princess Anne thanked each member of the cabinet “most warmly” for the “really lovely rug.” One member of the Cabinet reportedly said that the Americans made the rug appear “pretty crummy” and that when U.S. President Nixon and his administration gifted Princess Anne and Mark Phillips four solid-gold candlesticks and a crystal bowl, they ought to have thought of a better present.
