13. Tahawus Town, Adirondack Mountains, New York

The Adirondack town of Tahawus, once a thriving village with two distinct mining enterprises, is now a ghost town. Major iron mining and smelting activities were located there, although the majority of those structures—aside from a few blast furnaces, garages, and outbuildings—have been destroyed.

Tawahus was twice shut down due to operational problems with the mine. Having officially and permanently discontinued operations in 1989, Tahawus is currently among the most well-known ghost towns in New York State. Even though Tawahus was purchased for $8.5 million in 2003, not much has been done with the area, and the remnants of ten structures still stand where they once stood.
