Awa Maru’s unfortunate fate is very tragic. In 1945, a US ship assaulted the massive ship that was operating as a relief ship under the Red Cross’s service. The Awa Maru was quickly destroyed by torpedoes. Of the more than 2,000 people on board, only one lived.

The Japanese government didn’t begin salvaging the ship until 1980, despite the fact that it was found in 1977. The authorities denied there was any treasure to be found once the massive salvage job was finished, despite reports that there was over $5 billion in platinum on board.
